Riedel created the Vinum series in 1986 with specific designs that accentuated the characteristics of a grape varietal. Vinum was not developed on a drawing board, but in tasting workshops based on the performance commands the shape to deliver superior performance. Vinum is executed in lead-free crystal, which is machine blown in Bavaria, Germany to meet the same quality and clarity as of Riedel's glassware.

Differing opinions on the ideal cognac glass are as old as the drink itself. Even today, cognac is mainly served in short, wide, tulip-shaped glasses despite the disadvantages this traditional shape has for the enjoyment of cognac. The finely tuned shape of this Cognac glass harmonizes the aroma and the taste, tempering the alcohol and the stringency on the palate while emphasizing the bouquet. The flute-shaped glass allows its contents a very small evaporation surface.
