Riedel created the Vinum series in 1986 with specific designs that accentuated the characteristics of a grape varietal. Vinum was not developed on a drawing board, but in tasting workshops based on the performance commands the shape to deliver superior performance. Vinum is executed in lead-free crystal, which is machine blown in Bavaria, Germany to meet the same quality and clarity as of Riedel's glassware.

In 1992, Georg Riedel invited a distinguished panel of Zinfandel producers to join him for a series of workshops and tastings to create a new glass shape capable of highlighting all the nuances and complexity exhibited by Zinfandel and Riesling. The resulting shape tempers the alcohol, accentuates the rich berry and spice characteristics, while gently interweaving the acidity, tannin and fruit to create the perfect balance of components.
